Island Beaches
Last updated: April 2008

St Lucia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Some are only a stone’s throw away from the main tourist hubs while others require an exciting four wheel drive adventure.

West Coast Beaches

Cariblue
Cap Estate, Gros Islet

This is a golden stretch of sand situated on the north west tip of the island and used as the hotel beach for The Body Holiday at Lesport. Access to the beach is via the hotel and there are all-inclusive packages available which will allow you to use the hotel facilities, have lunch, sunbathe and get drinks delivered to your sunlounger. You can also book watersports such as waterskiing and dinghy sailing. This cove is generally calm and good for swimming although occasionally gets large swells coming off the St Lucia/Martinique channel. Either end of the beach is fringed by rocky outcrops popular with local single line fishermen.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Almond Smugglers Cove
• The Bodyholiday at Le Sport
• St Lucia Golf Club

Smugglers Cove
Cap Estate, Gros Islet

Situated at the very northern tip of the island, this small cove has views out to Martinique and often gets large waves making it difficult to swim too far out. There is also a strong offshore current beyond the rock outcrops enclosing the beach. It loses the sun fairly early in the afternoon so not the best spot for sun worshippers. The sand is gold/brown and finely grained and the beach is fringed by rocky outcrops at either end. At present there are no facilities on the beach apart from a few permanent sun umbrellas and a small shelter at the back. Accessed via steps through the Cap Maison resort (under construction).

Anse De Cap Beach
Cap Estate, Gros Islet

Accessed via the Almond Smugglers Cove resort, this beach has brown fine grained sand. It’s protected from the northeastern swell so is good for swimming year round. There are facilities available through the hotel which offers all-inclusive day packages. The beach is a little scruffy and not really picturesque.

Pigeon Island National Park
Gros Islet

A small fee paid to the St Lucia National Trust gains access to the park which is replete with British military ruins including Fort Rodney and Signal Hill where the Brits spent time spying on the neighbouring French island of Martinique. The park has two small but picturesque gold sand beaches. Once you enter the park, turn left and you will hit the first and largest of the two beaches. The sand is soft and the beach fringed by palm trees. The second, smaller beach, is in the next cove along and is dotted by stones and rocks. Both beaches are protected and good for swimming. They are gently slopping and remain shallow a long way out. The park itself benefits from funky little waterside café called Jambe du Bois, and an English pub called the Captain’s Cellar (built in the old officer’s quarters on the northern, Atlantic side of the island ). There are also toilet facilities.

Pigeon Island Causway
Gros Islet

The causeway was built in the late 70s to connect Pigeon Island to mainland St Lucia. A long stretch of beach and land was created on the southern side of the road which still maintains a slightly man-made feel. The light gold sand is grittier with chunks of coral and stones. Much of this stretch of sand is fronted by Sandals Grande and The Landings (still under construction), but there are still popular slots at either end (close to the entrance to Pigeon Island National Park, and at the Gros Islet village end of the beach) frequented by locals most Sunday afternoons. Access is via the Pigeon Island road. Day passes are available from Sandals Grande for US$100 including lunch, drinks and use of all of the beach and other facilities (10am to 6pm).

Reduit Beach
Rodney Bay, Gros Islet

This is St Lucia’s most popular beach servicing the tourist hub of Rodney Bay. There are numerous hotels along this golden stretch of sand which slopes steeply to the water’s edge. This means the beach can get crowded during peak season. Reduit remains exposed to sea swells so often gets a bit of surf. There are numerous watersports on offer including water-skiing, jet skis for hire, banana and donut rides, and paragliding. Sunloungers and umbrellas are available for hire in front of The Ramp (a concrete access point to the beach near Spinnakers beach bar).

Trouya Beach
Marisule, Gros Islet

This west coast beach is accessed from the Windjammer Landing turn-off and is in the middle of a residential area. Popular for local weekend barbecues (the remnants of which often remain behind), the beach has brown sand and nice views of Pigeon Island in the distance. The beach can be a little scruffy and is fringed either end by rocky outcrops. It is fairly protected which means the surf is relatively calm.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Windjammer Landing

Labrellotte Bay
Marisule, Gros Islet

This beach is accessed via Windjammer Landing or Eastwinds Inn (an all-inclusive property). The best part of the beach is in front of Eastwinds which is quieter and the sand is more natural. The sand has a man-made feel in front of Windjammer and covered with sunloungers. With two resorts, the beach has all of the amenities. Windjammer’s restaurant and watersports facility are open to the public and those who have lunch on property are usually allowed to use the sunloungers for free.

Choc Bay Winds
Choc, Castries

This is an expansive beach which stretches from Marisule Estate all the way to Vigie beach with views of Rat Island (a former leper colony now owned by Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott). The sand is light gold and the beach is exposed to sea swells which can bring large waves. The area near Waves beach bar is a popular local hang-out at the weekends and is also the easiest public access point to the northern portion of the beach. Beach volleyball and other activities are often on the go. The beach is fringed with palm trees and there are plenty of amenities associated with Waves and Villa Beach Cottages. Heading towards Castries, day passes are available at Sandals Halcyon for US$100 which includes lunch, drinks and all of the beach and other facilities on the property (10am to 6pm).

Vigie Beach (Malabar)
Vigie, Castries

Another large stretch of light gold sand fringed by palm trees. The easiest access point to the beach is at its southern end, opposite the George FL Charles Airport. The surf is broken by an offshore reef which stretches along the bulk of the beach making it safe for swimming, but it can get rough when seas are particularly high. There are a number of vendors selling drinks and food near the airport and also near the Vigie Cemetery which backs onto the beach. The all-inclusive Rendezvous hotel also offers couple’s-only day passes

La Toc
Castries

Access to La Toc beach is via the all-inclusive Sandals Regency Resort and Spa which fronts its entire stretch. Day passes are available at US$100 per person including lunch and use of all of the hotel’s beach and other amenities. The sand is golden and the beach is generally good for swimming, although the surf can become rough in high seas. Other than the hotel facilities, there are no amenities on this beach. Bagshaws batik and screen-printing boutique is on a cliff overlooking the beach.

Cul de Sac Beach
Ciceron, Castries

This is not a beach for recreational use. The bay is home to the Hess oil storage facility and the only useable stretch of beach is in front of the former Ciceron landfill site now capped for remediation but with possible leachate issues. Situated off the Millennium Highway.

Labas Beach (sand spit)
Marigot Bay, Castries

This attractive palm covered sand spit on the northern side of the bay is accessible only by boat (there is a ferry which runs 24/7 from the Police station dock and costs EC$5 for a round trip). Work is underway to restore the beach which has been affected by erosion. There are gabion baskets on the outer edge which will eventually be removed once sand levels are restored. This is a lively local beach with vendors’ stalls and guests from the various villas and guest houses around the bay, and the Discovery hotel. The Marigot Beach Club is at the northern most end of the spit and provides facilities such as a restaurant, bar and toilets. The sunloungers and umbrellas are primarily for the use of Discovery and Beach Club guests, but there are a few available for hire. The beach can get busy during peak season.

Anse La Raye
Anse La Rays

This brown sand beach fronts a rustic little fishing village and is very much a place of work for the local fishermen. Their boats, nets and fishing tackle can be seen all along the beach which is primarily the haunt of village children. There is a jetty for the fishing boats which is used as a diving platform for the more adventurous youngsters. Every Friday evening the road in front of the beach is blocked to car traffic and the fishermen set up grills and barbecues along the street. Fish Friday is popular with both tourists and locals who enjoy fish in foil, fresh bakes, stewed lambi, tuna steaks, lobster, Piton beers and other treats.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Discovery at Marigot Bay

Anse Cochon
Anse La Raye

This is a silver stretch of sand with some of the best snorkeling on the island. The Anse Cochon Reef is home to parrot fish and other colourful reef dwellers. Just offshore is the popular Lesleen M wreck dive site, while on shore, the beach is home to Island Divers. There is a beach front restaurant (with toilets) and dive shop in addition to sunloungers for the use of the guests of Ti Kaye Village nestled on the cliff above. This beach can be quite exposed to the sea swell and at times has a large surf. It is also one of the most popular stops for day-tripping catamarans so it can get extremely busy and noisy in the early to mid-afternoon.

Anse Liberté
Belvedere, Canaries

This is a pretty cove with clear water and silver sand. It is nice for swimming but a bit of hike if approached by land through the now closed Anse la Liberte National Trust camp site. There is a trail through the site which will take you to the beach, which is also accessible by boat but difficult to land on in a large swell. The small beach is fringed by rocky cliffs.

Nearby hotels & activities

• The Bodyholiday at Le Sport

Anse Janbon
Canaries

Accessible via a rough road off the main highway. It is best reached by boat. Small with silver sand and excellent for swimming. There are no facilities available at present although there was a restaurant there at one time (the building which housed the restaurant is now closed up except for private functions).

Anse Mamin
Soufriere

This is a black volcanic sand beach which fronts the ruins of an old sugar mill. The old mill and grounds have since been transformed into one of the top mountain biking facilities on the island (Jungle Biking) with graded trails and great equipment. The water is very clear, but the sand can get extremely hot (black sand absorbs the heat). The area is considered part of the Anse Chastanet resort and is often used for weddings and beach picnics. Most people use the more popular Anse Chastanet beach next door. There are toilet and other facilities associated with the mountain biking base. Accessible only by boat or via Anse Chastanet.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Anse Chastanet Resort
• Jungle Biking

Anse Chastanet
Soufriere

Another beach of steep-sloping black volcanic sand. This beach has some of the best snorkeling on the island with the Anse Chastanet reef just feet from the shore. This is also the home of Scuba St Lucia, the Anse Chastanet resort its main restaurant. Anse Chastenet is very strict about the use of its sunloungers which are strictly for hotel guests only. Access to the beach is via boat or the resort access road off the main west coast highway. The road is in an extremely poor state of repair.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain
• Scuba St Lucia

Anse Des Pitons
Soufriere

Situated smack between the Gros and Petit Pitons, this is the only white sand beach on the island thanks to the Hilton group which previously operated the hotel. They imported barge-loads of white sand from Guyana to the tune of US$1million. At the water’s edge you can still see the signature black volcanic sands associated with the southwest of St Lucia. The water is very clear here and there’s great snorkeling along the base of the Petit Piton. There is a restaurant and other facilities associated with the Jalousie Hotel. Sunloungers are available for hire and there’s drink service on the beach.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Jalousie Plantation
• Ladera Resort

Anse L'lvrogne
Choiseul

Situated on the southern slopes of the Gros Piton, this black sand beach used to be a popular spot with traditional boat builders. Accessible by boat and via the Fond Gens Libre/La Pointe Road, the water is extremely clear and extremely deep here. There are no facilities on the beach. This is a very picturesque spot and great for swimming.

Nearby hotels & activities

• Gros Piton Trail (Fond Gens Libre)

Anse de la Riviere Dorée
River Doree, Choiseul

Situated at the mouth of the River Doree, this beach can be reached via Balenbouche estate off the main West Coast Highway. There are no facilities on this silver sand beach which is not well utilized.

Nearby hotels & activities

Black Bay
Laborie

This is a small golden sand beach not well utilized on the southwest corner of the island. Accessible via a small road off the main highway ground has been broke in the area on the planned Ritz Carlton development. Construction is due to start in 2008.
